About
The Joint Apprentice Committee (JAC) of Iron Workers Locals 40 & 361 is a full service training facility that administers the apprenticeship program for structural Iron Workers and Riggers in NYC and surrounding counties. This program is overseen by both Labor and Management working together to produce professional Iron Workers who are trained to the highest standards in the construction industry.
Our three year program consists of classroom instruction, welding and on the job training. Students attend classes twice a week during the evening and occasional Saturdays. They also receive monthly evaluations while working and gaining valuable experience on their job sites. Students will have over 600 hours of classroom education and over 4,000 hours of actual job site training when they graduate.
JAC instructors are experienced Iron Workers with hundreds of years’ experience to share with their students. Our school has the latest technology available for classroom training and our 12,000 square foot work shop has 35 welding stations that are equipped with stick and wire feeders in every booth. We also have a 5 ton overhead crane we use for hands on training when erecting our structural steel mock ups.
The school provides courses that lead to licenses and certificates for Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), Master Rigger, Lift Director, Signal Man, Rigger and more to meet NYC DOB and NYS requirements.
Our school is also available to our 2,500 journeymen Iron Workers who continually return to school to sharpen their skills and gain CEU’s to keep all of their certifications up to date. Our program continues to evolve to meet the needs of the industry and provide qualified personnel for our contractors.
We have over 900 certified welders and our training facility is approved by the American Welding Society to administer welding tests at a moment’s notice to provide same day certifications for our contractors.

We have donated over 3,000 pints of blood to the New York Blood Center at our school’s annual blood drives.
Over 1,000 toys have been donated at our annual holiday toy drives to support less fortunate children and help them enjoy their holidays.
Since 2010 the school has donated over $325,000 to multiple charities including St. Jude’s where we also volunteer at their annual fund raising walk.
